From innovative research collaborations to community engagement, JCSPHPC is dedicated to transforming knowledge into action.

Here are some of the projects we are proud to showcase:

Jockey Club We WATCH Healthy Lifestyle Project

Project leader: Professor Samuel Wong
Project period: 2023 – 2025
About: Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, it is Hong Kong’s first public health initiative to apply lifestyle medicine to combat chronic diseases through providing assistance to middle-aged people on lifestyle improvement. “An increasingly rapid pace of life is one of the major factors that affect one’s health, so we hope to promote healthy habits in people’s daily lives to minimise the risk of chronic diseases and alleviate the burden on the public healthcare system in the long run,” said Prof. Samuel Wong, Director of JCSPHPC.

Health Assessment for Low-income Families

Project leader: Professor Eliza Wong
Project period: 2022 – 2024
About: In collaboration with Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, the programme conducted a health assessment for 251 kindergarten or primary school students from underprivileged families, as well as their parents, revealing crucial insights into their health and well-being. “Our research not only highlights the challenges of physical health, mental health, and social well-being but emphasises the importance of early detection and interventions to ensure these children receive the necessary support for healthy development,” said Prof. Eliza Wong, Associate Director (Teaching and Learning) of JCSPHPC.

Communication Injustice and Emotional Struggling in South Asian Women’s Healthcare Experiences in Hong Kong

Project leader: Professor Dong Dong
Project period: 2021 est.

About: Supported by Hong Kong’s General Research Fund, the two research projects launched since 2021 looked into discriminations suffered by Pakistani women – one of the most marginalized groups in Hong Kong — in the city’s public healthcare system. Under a hegemonic Chinese culture, the intersection of ethnicity, class and gender mutually shapes an unequal access to care for the group concerned. The first research completed in 2024 engaged a 24-month community-based participatory action research and collaboration with multiple NGOs who provide social services to local multicultural communities, in order to provide a better understanding of Pakistani women’s actual health needs. Bringing the study forward, the second and ongoing research will deploy the “photovoice” method to explore what it means to experience emotional suffering from the perspectives of Pakistani women in Hong Kong.

Jockey Club Healthy Community Hub Empowerment Scheme for Inadequate Houses Resident

Project leader: Professor Eliza Wong
Project period: 2021 est.
About: Supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Scheme is a three-tier health and nutrition project dedicated to support residents in subdivided units in the districts of Kowloon City, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing in Hong Kong. Bringing together nurses, nutritionists, social workers, scholars and public health practitioners, the Scheme sought to empower the residents for the long run through the transfer of knowledge in health protection and more efficient deployment of community resources.

Hong Kong Health Promoting Schools Accreditation System
