The CUHK Thomas Jing Centre for Mindfulness Research and Training is pleased to welcome Professor Eric Loucks, Director of the Mindfulness Center at Brown University, for a scientific talk exploring the role of mindfulness-based interventions in cardiovascular health. This event is intended for CUHK members.
Recent years have seen growing interest in the application of mindfulness-based approaches to clinical and public health challenges. Among these, hypertension remains one of the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease worldwide. As researchers seek innovative strategies to support prevention and management, mindfulness-based interventions are emerging as a promising area of investigation.
CME/CPD accreditation is pending. Registration will close on 26 July 2026 (Sunday).

| Topic | Adapting Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Hypertension Across Populations and Health Systems |
| Speaker | Prof. Eric Loucks Director, Mindfulness Center at Brown University Professor, Department of Epidemiology Brown University School of Public Health United States |
| Abstract | This talk will explore recent discoveries on why, when, and how to adapt mindfulness programs, particularly for improving cardiovascular health. The focus will center on the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) program, a National Institutes of Health-funded intervention developed and evaluated by Dr. Loucks and his team. We will examine not only its effects on blood pressure levels, but also its influence on dietary choices, sedentary behaviour, interoceptive awareness, depression symptoms, and overall cardiovascular health. These findings, disseminated in journals such as the Journal of the American Heart Association, JAMA Network Open, and Health Psychology, represent an important step forward in understanding mindfulness-based approaches to both cardiovascular and mental health, as well as the intersection between the two. |
| Key Takeaways | • An understanding of the impact of the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) program on blood pressure. • Insight into the role of the MB-BP program in influencing behavioural determinants of hypertension, such as diet and sedentary behaviour. • The ability to explain the effects of the MB-BP program on measures of self-regulation, including interoceptive awareness and depression symptoms. |
About the Speaker
Professor Eric Loucks is a professor, researcher and innovator in the study of mindfulness and health. As Director of the Mindfulness Center at Brown University, he leads efforts to advance the science and application of mindfulness-based practices to improve well-being and address public health challenges.
Dr Loucks developed the Mindfulness-Based College for Young Adults (MB-College) programme and the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) programme, both of which have been evaluated through NIH-funded randomised controlled trials. His research encompasses mindfulness epidemiology, evidence synthesis and implementation science, with a focus on translating mindfulness research into practical tools that support health and well-being.
He is also the author of The Mindful College Student: How to Succeed, Boost Well-Being and Build the Life You Want at University and Beyond. Committed to bridging rigorous science with real-world impact, Dr Loucks empowers individuals and communities by advancing evidence-based mindfulness practices that support health and resilience.
