The JC School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, proudly announced the launch of the One, Planetary and Eco Health Nexus (OPEN) on 5 February 2026 at the CUHK–NUS Joint Symposium on the Future of Infectious Diseases.

OPEN serves as a dynamic new research hub that unifies the School’s strengths across three complementary disciplines, establishing a cohesive identity and a centralized platform for interdisciplinary collaboration.

By connecting experts across sectors and catalysing global partnerships, OPEN is dedicated to addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of the 21st century—including emerging infectious diseases, food insecurity, and mental health burdens exacerbated by climate change, biodiversity loss, altered land use, and other causes.

With a strong commitment to knowledge co-creation and real-world translation, particularly for Low- and Middle-Income Countries, OPEN envisions a world where the integrity of planetary systems supports equitable health and well-being for all living beings.

OPEN’s Research Primarily Focuses on Three Key Themes:

  • Planetary Health: Climate change and health; environmental health justice; pollution and novel entities.
  • Eco Health: Global health ethics; socio-ecological determinants of inequities, chronic disease, and well-being; the health impacts of urbanization, migration, and housing.
  • One Health: Antimicrobial resistance; infectious diseases; One Health Microbiome; interconnected health of humans, animals, and ecosystems; One Health policy and governance.

OPEN is led by an interdisciplinary team comprising:

OPEN welcomes researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and communities worldwide to collaborate in creating innovative, equitable, and sustainable solutions to global health challenges.

A dedicated webpage will soon be launched under the JCSPHPC website, providing a one-stop platform for OPEN’s latest projects, publications, and events.
