From Nov 10 to Dec 10, 2023, the Jockey School of Public Health and Primary Care (the School) held a series of training workshops on systematic review and meta-analysis. This enlightening event was organized by Prof Joey Yang, Assistant Professor of the School, in collaboration with Prof Muzi Na, Associate Professor of College of Health and Human Development, The Pennsylvania State University (PSU). A total of 43 participants from CUHK and PSU joined the workshops, some in person and others via Zoom.

Over five hands-on workshops, Prof Yang and Prof Na navigated participants through the intricacies of systematic review, with an aim to improve their practical skills in conducting this kind of research which can be and has been widely used to address a variety of topics including public health, clinical medicine, education, psychology, and other areas. On top of the classroom learning, participants were also provided the opportunities to apply their newly acquired knowledge in real-world research settings, with three systematic review projects incubated from the event.
The workshops made a big success, as evidenced by the impressive average CTE score of 5.73 out of 6 as well as very positive written comments. One of the participants remarked, “The materials were presented in detail, and the hands-on activities were useful for better understanding. The lecturer is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.” The teaching materials created for the workshops are not only beneficial for these participants but also hold relevance for other epidemiology courses of the School such as the EPID500X series.
Prof Joey Yang expressed his special thanks to the support of CUHK Teaching Development and Learning Enhancement Grant 2022-25, without which the free workshops would not have been possible. He hopes that, with further support from the University, more events of this kind can be organized to benefit the students.
