We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Jing Chen, Research Assistant Professor at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK, has won the prestigious Rising Star Award at the 2025 Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) Annual Meeting in Beijing on March 28, 2025.

The Award was presented to recognise Dr. Chen’s contribution to public health research in liver diseases. She conducted an economic evaluation of various treatment strategies to achieve a functional cure for Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB). The economic evaluation identified the most cost-effective strategy for a functional cure for CHB, making a stride towards eliminating the viral disease in Asia Pacific – a key goal shared by APASL.

The economic evaluation also highlighted stark regional disparities in the cost-effectiveness of different strategies across high-income, upper-middle-income, and lower-middle-income economies in Asia Pacific. While new strategies improved treatment outcomes, cost remained a prohibitive barrier in lower-middle-income economies. The research underscored Dr. Chen’s commitment to bridge academic studies with practice to advance affordable and translational healthcare.

Dr. Chen expressed gratitude for the support of her research from her mentors, collaborators, JCSPHPC, and CUHK. As a Rising Star Award winner, Dr. Chen will lead the APASL Viral Elimination Taskforce to foster young talents in public health research in liver diseases.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong was also honored with the Best Organisation Award at the 2025 APASL Beijing.

Founded in 1978 in Singapore, APASL is one of the leading associations based on the investigation and treatment of liver diseases in the world. It is also the largest scientific body that upholds the standards and profession, researches and creates improved treatment methods for millions of liver patients, particularly in the entire Asia Pacific Region. Held under the theme "Multidisciplinary Collaboration for Elimination and Cure," APASL brought together over 5,000 leading liver disease experts globally to its 2025 Annual Meeting in Beijing, China.
