Abstract:


With the growing aging population and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, there is an increasing demand for developing personal healthcare systems that can frequently collect physiological parameters of patients during their daily life, thus allowing early disease detection and timely response of health treatments. Wearable medical electronics have been proposed owing to their capability of continuously monitoring the physiological conditions of individuals outside hospitals.


In this seminar, Prof. Zhao will present the emerging nanotechnologies and analytical methods that enable a new generation of intelligent health monitoring devices. She will mainly focus on the design and fabrication of flexible mechanical and optical sensors for high accuracy measurement of blood pressure, a key bio-marker for cardiovascular systems. The optical sensor exploits a hybrid inorganic LED - organic phototransistor sensing scheme to provide high quality photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal monitoring. Through composition tuning and device engineering, they have achieved high-precision heart rate variability tracking and for the first time realized accurate and continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring with an epidermal optoelectronic device. A multiwavelength PPG approach has also been developed to enable tracking of multiple physiological parameters with a single sensing device.


About the Speaker:


Prof. Ni Zhao received her Ph.D degree in Physics from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2008. From 2008-2010 she worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Prof. Zhao is now a professor and Department Vice-Chair (Graduate) of Department of Electronic Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof. Zhao is also a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and a member of The Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences (YASHK) and Materials Research Society (MRS). She currently serves as the Associate Editor of Science Advances and Journal of Materials Chemistry C. Her current research focuses on optoelectronic, electronic and electrochemical devices based on organic and nanostructured materials, sensors and biomedical devices, spectroscopic characterizations of the physical processes in nanostructured thin films, structures, and devices.


About the Moderator:


Prof Benjamin Yip is currently Assistant Professor at JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2008, he received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. With his continued engagement at Karolinska Institutet on genetic epidemiological research, he is serving as the lead statistician in various clinical studies, ranging from clinical trials to cohort studies, steering committee member of Domestic Health Account (FHB), member of service learning committee (Chung Chi College), and a leading member of one WUN working group on integrated care model for multimorbidity. He is teaching health economics both on bachelor and post-graduate level. He is currently supervising four PhD students. Previously, he supervised/co-supervised four other graduated PhD students. Prof. Yip is also serving as the principal investigators or as the lead biostatistician in numerous funded projects (see below). He has 83 academic articles (up-to-date 20/07/2020) with a h-index of 17.
