JCSPHPC selected as Host Institution for phase 2 Fleming Fund Fellowships in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

We are delighted to announce that The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (JCSPHPC) has been selected as a Host Institution for the phase 2 Fleming Fellowships in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka from 2024 - 2025.

Strengthening AMR Surveillance

The World Health Organization recognizes Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the top global public health and development threats. Strengthening One Health AMR surveillance is undoubtedly essential to alleviate this pressing issue. AMR's root causes and consequences are closely linked to poverty and inequality, greatly affecting low- and middle-income countries. The current research and development pipeline is insufficient to address the rising levels of resistance, highlighting an urgent need for necessary measures to allow the public fair access to new and existing vaccines, diagnostics, and medicines.

Fleming Fund Fellowship Scheme

The Fleming Fund is a UK aid initiative by the UK Department of Health and Social Care supporting up to 25 countries across Africa and Asia, specifically targeting low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). Launched in 2015, the Fleming Fund invests in strengthening AMR surveillance systems through a portfolio of country grants, regional grants, fellowships managed by Mott MacDonald, and global projects managed by DHSC.

CUHK Fellowship team

The Fleming Fund fellowships at CUHK are expected to enhance the faculty’s influence regionally and globally, bringing positive impact to LMIC. A Virtual Orientation was successfully held on 21 – 23 August 2024 for fellows in Bangladesh.

Directed by Professor Hein Tun and Professor Paul Poon, both Associate Professors from JCSPHPC, the Fellowships team consists of outstanding academics from our School and the Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine) at CUHK. The fellows at beneficiary institutions in Bangladesh are from government departments, academic units, and research laboratories dedicated to public health, disease control, and related areas.
