About the Speaker
Professor Edwin CHAN obtained his undergraduate training in biochemistry from CUHK, doctoral training in genetics from The University of Cambridge (UK), and postdoctoral training in neuroscience from The University of Pennsylvania (USA). Since 1999, Edwin investigates on spinocerebellar ataxias, Huntington’s Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myotonic dystrophy, and other rare neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. He takes a multi-disciplinary approach to identity new disease loci, study disease pathogeneses, and develop therapeutics for these disorders. Edwin also initiated VoiceLink, a cross-disciplinary project aiming at developing an AI tool that can recognize patients' voice commands, transforming them from inaccurate or unclear speech into correct, synthesized voice output. He co-founded his company Rare Power Limited in 2023.
About the Moderator
Professor Roger CHUNG is Associate Professor of JC School of Public Health and Primary Care. As a social epidemiologist and bioethicist by training, Prof. Chung’s research uses the lens of biomedical ethics and justice to examine the social determinants of health and health inequalities. He is currently examining social determinants such as poverty, deprivation, socioeconomic disadvantage, environmental and housing factors, and migrant status. Prof. Chung is particularly interested in the health of the vulnerable populations, including socially disadvantaged individuals, migrant workers, and rare disease patients. Moreover, he is conducting research on aging‐related issues, including long‐term/end‐of‐life care and multimorbidity.
