CUHK JC School of Public Health and Primary Care presents our 20th Anniversary Series “Webinar Series on Implementation Science” with Professor Per Nilsen from Linköping University, Sweden.
Implementation science deals with questions concerning how to carry intentions into effect. The intentions may be formulated in policies, clinical guidelines or other recommendations; they can be manifested in specific interventions; and they can relate to the use of research in decisions by individuals and organizations.
In the two webinars, Professor Per Nilsen will introduce key approaches and implication in healthcare as well as social science settings.
Using Implementation Science to Link Research and Practice for Healthcare Professionals
The birth of implementation science is usually linked to the emergence of the evidence-based movement in the 1990s, which popularized the notion that research findings and empirically supported (“evidence-based”) interventions should be more widely implemented in healthcare and other settings for improved health and welfare of populations. The lecture by Professor Per Nilsen provides an overview of the field and summarizes knowledge about barriers to implementation and facilitators to overcome challenges to achieve a more evidence-based healthcare practice.

About the Speaker:
Per Nilsen is a professor in implementation research at Linköping University, Sweden. He was responsible for building a research program on implementation science at Linköping University, which has attracted national and international interest. As part of this program, Nilsen developed Master and doctoral-level implementation courses, which have run annually since 2011. The PhD course is international and attracts students from all over the world.
Nilsen leads several projects on implementation of evidence-based practices and policies in various settings. His research also covers issues such as workplace learning, change responses, leadership and professional culture in healthcare. He takes particular interest in issues concerning behaviour and practice change and the use of theories, models and frameworks for improved understanding and explanation of implementation challenges.
Nilsen’s varied research interests can be traced to his background, including studies in behavioural economy, with graduation from Stockholm School of Economics, and in systems development. Before he became a researcher in 2003, he had a 15-year career as organisational consultant in competence and development issues and as author of international books on artists such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Prince.
