The Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) and Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors without Borders (MSF) Hong Kong invites you to an in-person seminar to understand the ongoing Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is currently the second largest Ebola disease outbreak in history.
This forum will dive into how MSF is responding to the current outbreak without effective therapeutic treatment or vaccine, and the role of global health actors. What are the humanitarian challenges in the midst of conflict, substantial cuts in humanitarian aid, and the need to scale up fast enough to match the speed of the crisis. Explore the field-realities of public health activities such as case management, surveillance, diagnosis, and community engagement.

About the Speakers
Dr Javid is a Sudanese Iranian emergency medicine doctor, with extensive experience in both the United Kingdom’s National Health Service and with MSF. He joined MSF in September 2009 as an emergency doctor in Basra, Iraq, Dr Javid has worked in medical and programme coordination roles since then in Haiti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria, Chad, Ukraine, UK, in Mediterranean search and rescue, and in Sierra Leone during the West Africa Ebola epidemic. His most recent roles with MSF have been as medical team leader in Gaza, Palestine, and as medical team leader in Omdurman, Sudan, until February this year.
Ms. Kate is an Australian programmes manger and public health specialist with over 15 years experience in international public health and humanitarian response, including Sierra Leone, Guinea, Syria, Yemen, UK, and Australia. She has designed and implemented live-saving interventions in complex emergencies with UK-Med, READY initiative, and MSF. Her passion lies in shifting decision making to local actors to strengthen health systems, and bridge gaps between research and action because sustainable change begins with communities leading their own solutions. Most recently, she was an emergency medical coordinator in Ituri, DRC, responding to the ongoing 2026 Ebola disease outbreak.Prof Chan is a clinical doctor and an expert in public health and humanitarian medicine, with more than a decade of experience in global humanitarian health intervention research and frontline operation. She has been the Chief Executive Office of GX Foundation since 2019, while concurrently serving as Assistant Dean (External Affairs), Kuok Group Professor in Global Health and Humanitarian Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Directors of Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) and CUHK Centre for Global Health (CGH). She has rich frontline experience, participating in frontline emergency response in more than 20 countries.
